This little piggy…

June 15, 2011

Meet the newest members of our pig population! Boss, Humphrey, Daisy, and Annie, 8 month old pot-bellied piglets, came to GLRS after their owners suffered a bad car accident and could no longer care for them. These babies have a cozy set-up in the Hoppy Hollow barn, with plenty of straw to burrow in and heat lamps to keep them toasty on the chilly sanctuary nights. Thanks to your generous donations, the piggies have medical care, and healthful meals and snacks every day.

What our piglets need now, however, is companionship. Did you know that pigs are highly social and playful creatures? Our little piggies love to romp in the straw, go for walks, play fetch, toss around crumpled up newspapers, or just sit quietly and snuggle with their human friends.  They’re remarkably clean, and will come when you call (in hopes of getting a treat!).

And it’s not just the youngsters that need one-on-one time. Our older pig residents, Arlo, Arnold, Oliver, and Woody, would also benefit from some affection. Nothing feels quite so good to a pot bellied pig as a nice long back scratch!

Would you be willing to donate an afternoon or evening of your time to be a pig socializer? You’ll have fun, and make friends for life. If this sounds like something that would interest you, send an e-mail to volunteer@rabbitsanctuary.org. The pigs, and all of us at GLRS, thank you.

Meet the bunny

Now and then we’ll use this blog to introduce you to some of our resident rabbits, who are patiently waiting for their forever home. Today we’d like you to meet Bessie. Bessie is a big, beautiful girl, with luxuriously soft fur, long lop ears, and deep brown eyes. She definitely likes things her way or the highway, which is how she earned the nickname “Queenie”! Bessie loves to lounge on top of her box, where she can look out and survey her kingdom.

We suspect that Bessie is hard of hearing. She doesn’t respond to any aural cues. This could explain her sometimes temperamental nature, as she doesn’t like to be startled. Bessie would do best in a quiet home with no other animals or children. She’d benefit from a regular routine, where she’d always know what to expect. Bessie would be an excellent companion for a senior citizen or retired person, who would have time to dote on her.

Bessie will take some time to warm up to you, but once she’s decided you pass muster, she’s as sweet as honey. She needs someone who’s patient enough to give her the time and space she needs to feel comfortable, so her true sunny personality has a chance to show through. Could that someone be you? Full house

MerlinThe sanctuary is bursting at the seams! With the arrival of the newly rescued Tuttle Hill bunnies, we’re filled to capacity with over 70 bunnies. You may have heard about the Tuttle Hill gang. They were living in horrible conditions in the back yard of a hoarder, just a few miles down the road from the sanctuary. It took a sanctuary worker, Noelle, and volunteers Tim and Shelly over a week to catch them, with the aid of live traps and a lot of sweet talking. So far they’ve rounded up 14, and there may still be more.

MuffinThe gang had temporary digs in the garage of the sanctuary, but that wasn’t suitable for the long term. So the staff did some bunny shuffling and found room in the Binkyville barn. Now Merlin, who used to be confined to a cage not much larger than he is, has a spacious pen with plenty of room to stretch out and hop around. All the bunnies are enjoying their new clean, safe environment. If you stop by to see them, be sure to save some pets for Solomon, a striking jet black bunny. He’ll stand up on his hind legs begging for attention and treats!

SolomonThanks to generous donations from sanctuary supporters, we can now start making arrangements with the Humane Society of Huron Valley to have the rabbits’ medical needs addressed. Of course each bunny will be spayed or neutered. Then they’ll be available for adoption. Watch for them on petfinder.com!
