Veg out!

April 18, 2018

Weekends in April are kind of tricky. With the wild weather shifts we’ve been having, we might spend Saturday cleaning out our flower beds and Sunday cleaning the ice off our windshields!  It’s enough to make us throw our hands up in the air and collapse on the sofa with a bag of Cheese Curls. But we’ve got a better way to veg out!

Join us at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi on Sunday, April 29, for VegMichigan’s annual VegFest! It’s a celebration of all things vegan.

Save your skepticism, Carnivores! A vegetarian/vegan diet isn’t all lettuce and flax seed. See for yourself, as you make the rounds of VegFest’s food court and try your free samples. Attend cooking demonstrations put on by three well-respected vegetarian chefs, and taste the incredible variety of meat-free meals available to you.

And the v/v lifestyle isn’t just for reed-thin millennials. Just ask Theo Riddick, a very vegan Detroit Lion. He’ll be there to explain why he switched up his nutrition protocol, and the benefits he’s enjoyed as a result. You’ll also hear from PBS contributor Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author and medical researcher Dr. Joel Kahn, diabetes specialist Caroline Trapp, NP, and a host of other experts.

GLRS will be among 150 exhibitors on hand to promote their animal-friendly, cruelty free, ecologically oriented products and services. Here’s your chance to “try before you buy”. Ask as many questions as you like, enjoy free samples, sign up to win cool stuff. Bring the kids! VegFest will have a special section with toys and games just for them.

VegFest runs from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is $17 at the door, but save $3 by ordering your tickets on line at for just $14. No raking, no shoveling, no cooking–just a day of free feasting and fun. See you there, snow or shine!

Brrrrringing up bunny

October 18, 2017

Ask a hundred people for the best example of “money pit”, and 98 of them will answer “children” or “old houses”! We love them, and they’re well worth the sleepless nights, endless toil, and cringe-inducing Visa bills. But holy heavens, does it never end???

We understand completely! Our sanctuary doesn’t need to fund little Sandy’s braces or pay the inevitable medical bills when brother Randy decides yet again to defy the laws of gravity and common sense. But we do have our fair share of challenges, with both kids and buildings. Especially in the colder months.

You know that sinking feeling every time you hear the furnace kick on in your home, as you anticipate another massive heating bill? Try keeping three vintage barns warm and cozy in the middle of what’s anticipated to be a harsh winter!

Have you ever seen a rabbit diving into a pile of hay? Blink and it’s gone! Our nearly 100 residents can raze remarkable amounts in a single week. And just like with most freshly grown items, hay prices spike outside of growing season. So do the greens our rabbits need to stay healthy.

Do you find yourself munching more as the days grow darker? Humans and animals alike have a biological urge to bulk up a bit for the colder weather. At our farm, this means an increase in the amount of rabbit and pig pellets we use, as well as food for the cats.

And then there are the surprise expenses. We suspect by the time we’re finished with the spay and neuter bills for our 30 new baby kits, our vet will have no problem paying off her student loans!

Here’s where we come right out and ask for your help. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by the end of October, enough to provide security for the tough months ahead. If you are willing to help with a donation, please go to

If you’d like to see first-hand how your gift will be used, join us on Sunday, October 22, for our free GLRS Fall Celebration! Tour the barns, meet our residents, enjoy refreshments, and shop from our extensive selection of sanctuary memorabilia. Did we mention that our Farmer Dave has some of the most impressive pumpkins you’ll ever see? We’ll even help you load up your car!

Our Fall Celebration will run from 12-4, regardless of weather. Remember, the celebration is free, although donations are always appreciated. All proceeds from our sales go directly to the Winter Fund.

Baby binkies

August 30, 2017

When it rains, it pours…and you can help us hold the umbrella! Please join us on Sunday, September 10th, for a Baby Shower to welcome our newestminiature additions.

You’ve heard the old phrase “raining cats and dogs”. Around here, it’s been raining rabbits! First our heroic hoarding survivor Nala surprised us with eight tiny kits. Almost immediately afterward the Michigan Five arrived, all impossibly adorable and all under two months old. The deluge continued with four babies from Belleville.

Then just to mix things up, along came Maisy the piglet!

18 youngsters? That’s a kindergarten class! That’s both sides of a Little League game! That’s most of the Duggar family (and even they procured their kids one at a time)! You can see how this might have come as a shock. But now that the sheer terror has worn thin, we’re ready to celebrate our fresh fuzzy furbabies. And we’d love for you to join in.

Our baby shower will run from 1-4 PM, with free admission (although “diaper donations” are greatly welcomed!) Start your afternoon with light snacks, punch, and of course, cake! Stay for shower games and a silent auction (win a box of goodies to use to “baby” yourself!) Enjoy a tour of the grounds and barns, and of course, meet our irresistible guests of honor.

Happy new ‘ear!

December 28, 2016

bluedogrose-dancingrabbitsThe more, the merrier! Is that your holiday party philosophy? What could be better than ringing in 2017 surrounded by friends and family? A rousing New Year’s Eve celebration is just what many of us need after a long stressful year. But as you’re planning your end-of-year festivities, remember your four-footed family too.

Inviting the grandkids, nieces and nephews? There’s nothing more invitingiu-4 than the pitter patter of little feet, unless you’re a rabbit! Children are naturally drawn like a magnet to anything soft and fluffy. Fuel those kids with sugar cookies and adrenaline, and even the most well-behaved can let their enthusiasm run away with them.

funny-ugly-grandma-old-maid-aunt-hug-love-19076532The same can be said about adults as well! Do you remember being six years old and having to endure an endless line of cheek pinches and bosom hugs from overly perfumed relatives you’d only met twice in your life? Then you can sympathize with how your rabbit feels when a houseful of strangers wants to pet and cuddle her.iu-5

How many times have you accidentally come this close to stepping on a rabbit that appears out of nowhere while you’re busy with something else? And you’re used to having her around! Nothing sets the mood better than music, and once the champagne starts flowing things can get a bit raucous. Most people aren’t going to be looking at the floor while they mingle and dance.

It’s a rare rabbit that enjoys a lot of commotion and hubbub, so make the occasion comfortable for her too. You may want to set her up in a quiet room, away from your guests. A burrow box or bed to hide under, some fresh food and water, and a special “brave bunny” treat or two will go far to soothe her nerves.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Don’t forget to visit her throughout the evening. When the guests have departed, check your floors for any stray nibble-friendly confetti, streamers, or cocktail wieners before letting your rabbit come out to explore. Take some time to sit back and watch her investigate the new smells and evidence of strange goings-on. Now that’s a rabbit’s idea of a party!

Wander through our barns and meet our residents up close. You’ll discover for yourself how velvety soft bunnies’ ears feel, and how a simple tummy scratch can send a pig into porcine paradise!7b5a42a8451dfa2887e3d61479754dbc

Are you considering adopting, and wonder what’s involved in raising a rabbit? Our experienced volunteers will be happy to fill you in. Do you have questions about your own bun’s health or habits? We’ll be “hoppy” to see you there!

Farm fresh

August 17, 2016

This is the time of year that makes us glad to eat healthy! Can anything compare to the juicy goodness of a just-picked tomato, still warm from the sun? Or the sweet crunch of carrots that haven’t spent the last few weeks in a plastic bag? How about thick, crispy leaves of kale that OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAhaven’t been doused in a chemical bath? Supermarkets may advertise their “fresh” offerings, but nothing can beat the taste of produce straight from the field.

If you’re among the many of us who seek out farmers’ markets and roadside stands to stock our crisper drawers, have we got a tip for you! Sunday, August 21st, is the first GLRS Market Day of the season. Stop by from noon to 4PM and choose from a top-quality selection of veggies and greens grown right here on our farm. And you’ll have the added benefit of knowing your purchase benefits the sanctuary. All proceeds go directly toward caring for our residents.

bunny rabbits eating carrots and cabbage drawing Johann_Georg_Seitz_Gemüsestilleben_mit_HäschenThe exact list of choices will vary depending on how well Mother Nature cooperates, but you can expect to see veggies like cabbage, beans, peas, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, radishes…all classics that work equally well in your rabbit’s salad bowl as in your own. Later in the season we’ll have squash, gourds, and some of the biggest pumpkins you’ve ever laid eyes on!

While you’re shopping, be sure to look for our agricultural mastermind, Farmer Dave. He’s the one who works tirelessly to create and maintain the many gardens that surround our barns. Thanks to Farmer Dave’s green thumb, GLRS can now grow the majority of our rabbits’ summer produce, and still have plenty left over to offer to you!feeding_rabbits_hi

The Market is scheduled to open again on September 4th and 18th, and every Sunday in October. Hours are noon to four. If you’re feeling particularly generous, you might want to stop in the Adoption Barn and share a little nibble of your haul with your favorite rabbit!

You’re invited!

September 16, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-09-14 at 8.43.13 AM1995 was an exciting time for beginnings. Massive search engine Yahoo burst onto the internet. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened its doors in Cleveland. And Starbucks rolled out everyone’s new favorite drink, the Frappuccino. It was a year full of innovation, inspiration, and recreation.

And on one tiny midwest farm, something even more compelling was taking shape. A ragtag collection of animal lovers united in a common mission, to offer shelter and hope to unwanted domestic pigs and rabbits. Their fledgling group grew by leaps and bounds, driven by love and determination. Today, we call it the Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary.

Twenty years! That’s an impressive milestone for any organization. And we can’t let it pass by without a celebration. So we invite all of you, and your friends and family, to come out to our 20th Anniversary Open House Extravaganza next month, on Saturday, October 24th, from 12 to 5PM.

DownloadedFileTour our farm and learn the history of GLRS. Participate in clicker training and bunny massage demonstrations. Get answers to your most pressing bunny health and behavior questions. Enjoy vegetarian refreshments for both you and your bunny. Purchase fresh produce grown on-site, and shop for exclusive 20th anniversary GLRS merchandise. Bring the kids—we’ll have games, face painting, and crafts just for them.

Admission is absolutely free. Mark your calendars and plan to join us as we commemorate two exciting, fulfilling decades. Questions? Post them to the comments section of this blog, or contact Hope to see you all there!
