Ho Ho Ho!

October 31, 2012

Twas two months before Christmas
And all through the pens

All the bunnies were buzzing,
“Are they coming? When?”

It wasn’t old Santa
That filled them with glee

Nor festive wrapped presents,
Nor lights on a tree

What the buns wanted most
Was about to appear

A carload of kids,
Moms and dads, full of cheer!

The camera was ready
The farmhouse was clean

The lettuce was crispy
The parsley was green

Then each of the bunnies,
Refreshed from a nap

Hopped onto a child and
Curled up on their lap

The photos were priceless
The kids were aglow

Too quickly the time passed
‘Til they had to go

The buns waved their paws
As they hopped out of sight

“Merry Christmas to all,
And to all, carrot bites!”

Come out for pictures at the sanctuary on November 10th, from 10-6! Choose your favorite bun or bring your own pet! It’s only $20, and 100% of the proceeds go directly to the bunnies. Contact debbie@rabbitsanctuary.org for appointment times.

Road trip

October 17, 2012

Mark your calendars for October 27, gas up the car, and pack up your favorite bunny! It’s almost here—the 2012 Midwest BunFest in Whitehall, Ohio!

What is a BunFest? It’s a celebration of all things bunny! The Ohio House Rabbit Rescue is organizing the event, which brings together rabbit rescue organizations, product vendors, animal educators, veterinarians, and rabbit owners and lovers from across the Midwest.

Have questions about bunny care, health and behavior issues, or nutrition? Want to meet some adoptable rabbits? Looking for the opportunity to mingle with other bunny lovers and parents? The BunFest has it all.

Your rabbit is welcome to attend with you! Take advantage of the Bunny Spa, where your furry friend will enjoy a grooming session, mani/pedi, and massage. Have a professional glamour shot taken. When you or your bunny need a break from all the excitement, you can chill out in the Bunny Lounge.

We’ll be there, so please stop by our booth and say hello!

BunFest runs from 10 AM to 5 PM, and admission is only $5. For more information and directions, please visit http://www.midwestbunfest.org.

Put your BUNS in a Ford!

October 10, 2012

Ahh, that new car smell! There’s nothing like it. Picture yourself behind the wheel of a lean, mean, driving machine, maybe a brand new Mustang or a Fusion….and picture the buns of GLRS benefiting from it!

How can this be, you ask? It’s all thanks to the generosity of Gene Butman Ford in Ypsilanti. Stop by and take a test drive on Saturday, October 20th, and Gene Butman will donate $20 to the sanctuary. Bring your friends and family! The dealership will pay for up to 300 people. The rabbits could potentially earn $6000!

The first 100 drivers get special GLRS prizes! Register to win a Sweetest Day dinner at Quarter Bistro, or shop at our bunny store. Meet Anna, the sanctuary spokesbunny. The Humane Society of Huron Valley will be there, so bring a bag of dog or cat food and help care for their critters too.

Gene Butman Ford is located at 2105 Washtenaw Avenue in Ypsilanti. You can come in any time between 10 AM and 6 PM. You can even reserve your time slot, by contacting Lisa@rabbitsanctuary.org. See you there!

S.O.S.–Save Our Sweetie!

September 26, 2012

Poppin is barely eight months old, but she’s already seen how frightening the world can be. She was dumped at a shelter that wasn’t set up for rabbits, and they planned to euthanize her. When we rescued her, she was in rough shape, full of fleas, with a painful lump on her chest.

We took her to our vet, who told us the lump was a nasty abscess, possibly caused by a bite wound that was never treated. He put her on antibiotics, but only time will tell if she’ll need surgery.

During her convalescence, Poppin is being fostered by one of our bighearted volunteers. Despite her discomfort and the upheaval of being moved around, Poppin is a curious and affectionate little girl. She’s discovered the joy of couch climbing and running sprints down the hallway!

Poppin is a gorgeous girl, with snowy white fur and caramel highlights. She hasn’t quite grown into those big ears yet, as you can see! We’ve all got our fingers (and paws!) crossed that the antibiotic does the trick.

Here’s where we need your help. Clearly, surgery would be expensive, but even if she’s lucky and doesn’t need an operation, there’s still considerable expense involved in treating the infection. And after all is said and done she’ll need to be spayed.

This is the time of year we always come up short, but we can’t tell Poppin she’ll have to wait for treatment. Could you find it in your heart and in your budget to contribute to this cutie’s care? Just go to www.rabbitsanctuary.org/poppin. THANK YOU and we’ll keep you updated!

Hidden treasure

August 1, 2012

Montel is the kind of bun who doesn’t draw attention to himself, and that’s a shame. It’s all too easy for this non-descript little boy to be overlooked! A lovable cuddler with thick brownish gray fur, Montel thrives on attention. Stop by his pen and see him race out to greet you and collect pets!

Montel is our resident Cardboard King. There’s nothing he likes better than a big, sturdy box. He’ll climb up on top and survey his surroundings, then decorate the box with specially gnawed access holes. When he’s finished playing, he’ll curl up inside for a cozy snooze.

Could Montel be the bun for you? He’s fun-loving and curious, affectionate and energetic, and eager to find his new forever home. Would you like to meet him and see for yourself? Contact Carol at adoptions@rabbitsanctuary.org today!

Pet Fest!

July 25, 2012

Mark your calendars! You won’t want to miss the 5th Annual Ann Arbor Pet Fest on August 11th and 12th. Billed as “Southeastern Michigan’s Premier Pet Festival”, the event brings together dozens of rescue groups, animal-related businesses, and pet health professionals.

Learn all about your favorite animals, and meet some special adoptables. Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, even snakes and iguanas—the Pet Fest has something for everyone. Pick up helpful training hints. Watch product demonstrations, and shop for your favorite furry or feathered friend. You can even bring your own pet!

We’ll be there, so stop by our booth, say hello, and catch up on the latest sanctuary happenings. While you’re at it, you can make a donation, sign up to volunteer, or show your support with a GLRS T-shirt. Help us spread the word–no more homeless buns!

Food and beverages will be available. Admission is just $5, and children under 10 are free. Parking is also free. The Pet Fest will be held at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Road. For more information, go to www.AnnArborPetFest.com.

Bunnypalooza

June 13, 2012

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 23rd! GLRS proudly presents BunnyPalooza, starring singer/songwriter Kyle Vincent.

A successful recording artist and avid environmental activist, Kyle has been dubbed the “Crown Prince of Soft Pop” by Goldmine magazine. He takes a break from a grueling touring schedule to perform an afternoon of family-friendly original hits just for our sanctuary supporters.

The concert begins at 2PM, rain or shine. Cost is just $10 per person, and 100% of the proceeds go directly to the rabbits. Refreshments will be available, and guests are welcome to tour our barns and grounds.

Barry Manilow describes Kyle as “one of the best singer-songwriters to come along since the heyday of Tin Pan Alley.” We happen to agree. Come on out to the sanctuary and enjoy the show! Buy your tickets today.

Clickety split

June 6, 2012

Are you looking for something new and fun to do with your rabbit? Would you like your bunny to come when you call? How about go in her carrier with no fuss? Maybe you’d like him to jump up onto the sofa for easier petting. Consider clicker training!

Clicker training uses sound cues to guide your rabbit into the behavior you choose. “It lets you build your relationship with your rabbit to a new level,” says trainer and sanctuary volunteer Karen. She’ll teach the basics at a special class on Saturday, June 16th, from 10 AM-noon.

The class is $25, which includes your own clicker and a copy of the book “Getting Started: Clicking with your Rabbit” by award-winning writers Joan Orr and Teresa Lewin. You’ll also get plenty of hands-on practice with our sanctuary buns and pigs.

Rabbits are highly curious and extremely smart. Learning a new skill can alleviate depression and boredom, and give your bun a chance to show off! Bring out the best in your bunny friend! Space is limited, so sign up today.
